Steamroller Printing Contest at SVC, Sat, Aug 27

Why is it called "Wayzgoose"?  How does it work?  Who will win this incredible contest, and how, how, how, does one get their hands on one of these prints?

I'm hoping to find answers to these burning questions, get inspiration, and meet fellow DIY-printing enthusiasts this Saturday at the School of Visual Concepts where, according to rumors now circulating, the facebook page,  and the Wayzgoose  blog,  "...the competition will be fierce as teams from the local art and design community compete to print the coolest gigantic poster in the SVC parking lot with a steamroller instead of the traditional printing press. This year we have concocted the perfect storm of creative studios, letterpress superstars, and contingents from local art & design programs."

Free No Depression Concert Tomorrow, Fri, Aug 26, 5 p.m.

I went to the kexp free Concerts at the Mural last Friday at the Seattle Center in time to see the last band, Black Mountain, and was impressed with not just the band's performance, but was also enchanted with the crowd.  The scene included a refreshing lack of a scene: people looking young and fabulous sat with people looking not young and fabulous, or not fabulous, or not entirely concerned with being fabulous, which was, well, fabulous.

I will be going again tomorrow night to the last concert of the series, which I'm sure will live up to its title of "No Depression."  Ravenna  Woods, Pickwick, and Drew Grow & the Pastor's Wives will be there and so will the sun.

Bring a picnic or eat yummy food from the Skillet food truck.

Free, all ages.

Fear is Free

Winter is a time when we light candles and climb under quilts.  Some part of us relishes in passivity: we read, watch films, wait for spring.  Clothing becomes comfortable by necessity.  We wear sweatpants, long underwear, and pajamas.  But at the edges of all this comfort is a complacency that can seep into the heart and lead to atrophy of the muscles we need for growth.  The heart needs a certain amount of discomfort to remain active.  How can we make ourselves just uncomfortable enough?  I think we do this by doing something  that scares us, if only just a little.  This month, to begin a new year of growth in this season of comfort, I'm trying to scare myself a little every day. Maybe you might profit from this exercise as well.  Share something you've made or written. Try something you've always wanted to do but thought you'd do poorly. Do things poorly. Confess.  Risk rejection.  Ask for help. Say no.  Say yes.
