Friday. Who says it has to be black? Downtown Seattle, Nov 26.

This winter, I suggest practicing embracing light in all its forms.  You'll find electricity and fireworks downtown on Friday.

Tree Lighting Celebration & Holiday Parade
November 26, 2010 - Westlake Center - Downtown Seattle Washington

This holiday tradition is held in downtown Seattle every year ... and features a full-day of Holiday Fun. In 2010 the Holiday Parade commences on 7th Avenue at 8.45am, marching down Pine Street and University Street before heading north to Macy's for the official Tree Lighting Celebration and lighting of Macy's star at 5pm. A spectacular fireworks display rounds off the day's activities.

Fun Free Party for a Good Cause! Thurs, Oct 21

This could be a great way to meet people at non-profit organizations.  Lots of free goodies, but of course it's for a good cause, so we may want to bring our pocket books.  You'll need a yelp account (easy to set up) and to RSVP.

You're Invited To Yelp Helps!

Goody goody get-together!

On The Radar

C'mon, Dudes: The Big Lebowski Fest
Whack Those Balls: Smash Putt Mini Golf
Cavities On Cap Hill: Sweet Tooth Crawl
Elysian's Annual: Great Pumpkin Beer Fest
Pickin' Pumpkins: Fall City Farms Patch
Gather your good will and gumption and head on over to Yelp Helps, the Emerald City's first non-profit soirée of its kind! We're teaming up with some of Seatown’s most dynamic non-profts and local businesses to throw the biggest, baddest, and most do-goodest gala Seattle has ever experienced! It's all going down on Thursday, October 21st, and the best part is... you're invited!

This fashionable fête filled with fun and philanthropy takes place at one of Seattle’s most gorgeous and swanky spaces: Fremont Studios! You'll have the opportunity to get friendly with over 25 non-profits dishing out info through interactive demos like wine bottle ring tosses and raffles. Or rock out with Andrew Vait from Fremont Abbey Arts Center; get reel with One Reel's talent from none other than Teatro Zinzanni; geek out on Greek God's yummy yogurts; and go cuckoo for Kukuruza's gourmet popcorn. And that's only the start!

As you mix and mingle with passionate Seattle helpers and cause-worthy non-profits, enjoy complimentary hors d'oeuvres from Chao Bistro. Continue crunching on KIND's addictive sweets while pecking at some popchips. Fancy a babycake? Fill up on frosted treats from Bellevue's new Cupcake Royale! Feeling parched? Thank Two Beers, Big Al and Emerald City Beer, three of Seattle's best brewmasters, as they wet your whistles with some wicked local brews!

If you're still thirsty for more, get ready for a handful of options for spirit seekers and virgin drinkers. Novo Fogo, Jose Cuervo, and the newly-minted Moon Mountain vodka from Diageo will be shaking and stirring some crafty cocktails while Honest Tea, DRY Soda and PurBlu are offering up some nifty non-alcoholic options (though they make great mixers too!). But what’s a fabulous event without photo-documentation? Pose for a pic at the TWIF photo booth as they capture the night's festivities. Get ready for the lights, camera, action; you won't want to miss this fashionable and free event!

Art and Performance around Cal Anderson Park this Thur, Oct 14

The Blitz Capitol Hill Art Walk is this Thursday!  If you are already going to be on Capitol Hill on Thursday, October 14th to check out the Vis-a-Vis performance (which you should be),  pop by and check out Graham's show and the ZAPP space.  If you haven't already, you may want to get on Richard Hugo House's mailing list.  The list will provide you with lots of fun, indoor, often free, and all-ages events that the house hosts.
Below is some press from ZAPP (Zine Archive Production Project) at Richard Hugo House.  Last year I volunteered at the ZAPP library, and I teach occasion workshops in Zine construction there.  It's a great place to go and look through all the self-published itty-bitty-but-often-awesome journals.  There is also a space for constructing a master copy of your own zine.  ZAPP frequently has interesting art exhibits in the library, and it is just an interesting, laid-back space to meet people who are interested in comics, zines, art, and D.I.Y. creation.

From ZAPP email:
There are a few exciting events coming your way very soon! Next Thursday October 14, artist / author and now former ZAPP outreach intern Graham Isaac is presenting Jesus Christ Made Seattle Under Protest. Graham’s exhibit focuses on Seattle and how it’s changed over the years. Using photography, cartoon illustrations and prose, he grapples with themes of neighborhood pride, changing social landscapes and alienation from the familiar. The exhibit is from 5-8 p.m. @ ZAPP, is free, and will be running alongside the Blitz Capitol Hill Arts Walk.

It's First Thursday Already. Check Out Ryan Molenkamp's Newsletter and Make Yourself A Map!

Once again, I'm posting Ryan Molenkamp's monthly newsletter.  Once again, I give Ryan props for knowing what to see in the Seattle Art world and for getting the word out!

Hello everyone,

Well, what a busy last couple of months it's been.  So much art, so many happenings.  Thanks to everyone who helped out and who came out for The Portrait Challenge at Bumbershoot, it was a great weekend.  This week at the studio we'll be finishing up the last 40+ pages, and I'll rescan them all to the flickr page when complete.  Also, The Portrait Challenge is coming to the Seattle Art Museum's Think Tank space, for the duration of the Picasso show!  Be sure to stop by when you head to SAM.

Thanks for all your support, here's a list of shows to check out this month:

BSC and BSC-related art events:

October 7th - First Thursday at the Baby Seal Club  This week we have artists Jenny Jenkins and Matthew Witschonke showing video and photo prints in the gallery.  Works by Chris Sheridan, Kate Protage, and myself will be on display in the studio.  Open 6-10pm  619 Western Ave, 3rd Floor.

Opening October 7th  Bullion New works by Chris Sheridan at La Familiar Gallery. Reception Thursday , October 7 · 5:00pm - 8:00pm; show runs through October 30th.

Opening October 7th  Creeps Show  A group exhibition in the Flatcolor Gallery Loft, including work by Augie Pagan, Parksid, Chris Sheridan, Brian White and more.    Show runs through 10/31

Opening October 8th  Inside Out  Bherd Studios Gallery presents the urban contemporary work of Seattle artists: Michelle Anderst, Joe Vollan and Chris Sheridan. Each artists work is themed around the inner workings of the mechanical, human anatomy and the soul.  Reception Friday, October 8 · 6:00pm - 9:00pm; show runs through Nov 5th.

The Portrait Challenge @ SAM!  Opening October 6th (members preview) + October 8th  In the Think Tank space.  This show will up through January 17th.  The same time as some guy named Picasso...you might have heard of him.  I'll be on hand for the Community Day on October 16th, from 10am-3pm, taking pictures and making model pages!

KAC Redux Auction/party  I have a work, 95 Place - the attached image,  in this art auction for Kirkand Arts Center!  At the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, Friday October 8th.  This Friday!

SOIL "All SOILS Day" art Auction/Party  I also have a painting in the SOIL fundraiser Auction too!  This event is at the Seattle Design Center on October 16th.

Don't forget to check out City Arts and Molo's Sketchbook for all the latest art, music, film and culture news!

Molo's October Art Picks:

Rendered Invisible:  New works by Curtis Erlinger
PUNCH presents Rendered Invisible, recent works by Curtis Erlinger.  Curtis has quietly been making some wonderful paintings that are far more complex than they appear at first glance.  They reference photography and seem to have a lot to do with childhood and family memories - in an interesting way.  I'm very interested to see this new large body of work.  October 7 - 30, 2010  Reception  5 - 8pm  First Thursday, October 7, 2010

After The Trees Have Grown Gregory Schaffer at Gallery4CultureNew documentary-style photos by Gregory Schaffer "Schaffer demonstrates a remarkable ability to recognize mundane indicators of societal malaise and transform it into art"  October 7 - 29, 2010.  Reception October 7th, 6-8pm

Fall Ladies Show  20twenty.  It's in Ballard.  I've never been to the store,  but this show features the work of 2 excellent artists I know, Jess Rees and Kendal Tull-Esterbrook.  Reception is Saturday, October 9 · 7:00pm - 9:30pm

Jess Rees is also showing (recpetion Sat Oct 9th 6-9pm):  Feather Collection. Watercolors by Jess Rees, Velouria Boutique and Gallery

Albert von Keller and Implied Violence at The Frye Art Museum  Sure I work here, but both of these shows are well worth the trip. Albert von Keller's paintings of the occult, seances, mystical healing - and the people who were involved with the scientific study of these things in Munich and Europe in the late 19th Century are fascinating.  Implied Violence is a local performance art group who do work that has a great deal of self constricting movement, theatrics, endurance challenges, altered states, and all sorts of strangeness.  I'm excited to see the Frye host an all day performance by the group on Saturday October 9th, from 11-5pm, in the exterior reflecting pool!  It will be quite a show.  Member's opening for both shows October 8th, 6-9pm.  Shows run October 9th-January 2nd.

Other shows to check out in October:

Anatomy Lessons Ghost Gallery.  "A beautifully creepy group show featuring Michelle Smith-Lewis, Corey Urlacher, Anita Arora
and Jessica Edwards.
"

Repercussions: Tides & Time at SOIL.  "a  travelling curated exhibition which surveys the ways contemporary artists document place and time"  Curated by Alex Emmons.  October 6-31.  Reception Oct 7; 6-8pm.

No Such Thing As a Free Ride?

Heading south may be free.

Maybe you are one of the Seattlites who coos, "but I like the rain," when we hit these first days of Autumn with their gray portent of impending months of darkness.  If that is the case, I couldn't be happier for you, and I sincerely hope all your Gortex fantasies come true in the next five or six months.   For the rest of us, it's time to make sure we have at least two trips to sunnier lands planned between now and March.

These days I'm curious about the Craigslist offers for ride sharing. People post offers for passengers for trips as close as Tacoma and as far as Miami Beach. They usually ask for a little cash and say if they are male or female. You can also post yourself, and say you are looking for a ride. You could probably even say if you couldn't offer cash. It could turn out all sorts of ways, from fun to annoying and beyond.

Biography
The day had left me tired in a strange way, and I was about in the mood to skip supper and lay down in the short grass and rest, lay there and watch the white moon move across the sky. I flipped a stick into the tank and watched it bob on the rising water. It made me think of an old hillbilly song by Moon Mulligan, called "I'll Sail My Ship Alone." With all the dreams I own. Sail it out across the...more...

Writers in the Schools (WITS) matches a local creative writer with a public elementary, middle or high school or hospital to design innovative and culturally relevant lesson plans that meet the goals of the participating classes while engaging students. The program invigorates both students and teachers with fresh ideas and encouragement. Teachers report students' quality of writing improves, and they become more confident in expressing themselves. Gizan Gando from Kimball Elementary School is just one of many students inspired by the program. His writer-in-residence had this to say about him: "Gizan Gando is hungry for words that express beauty and truth. He is the writer who skips me to the front of the room when I arrive, 105% twinkle." Gizan's poem and more stories about other published students are available at our blog: http://salwits.wordpress.com/ .

Founded in 1987, Seattle Arts & Lectures is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to spark the imagination through programs that connect people and ideas. In addition to presenting today's foremost fiction and nonfiction writers, Seattle Arts & Lectures' events and courses illuminate arts, culture, and a world of ideas. Our programs include the Literary\Arts Series, American Voices,
the Poetry Series, and Writers in the Schools.

Sweet Songs Are Free, Tue, Sep 21

Cobirds Unite (featuring Rusty Willoughby & Rachel Flotard) free

There have been lots of chances to hear these guys over the summer and more to come  the next weeks, but this Tuesday it's free. You may have seen a lot of these folks live, but not playing together, I bet. What I've been able to hear online and on KEXP has been sweet. Kind of a last-official-day-of-a-not-so-summery-Seattle summer sort of sweet, which you just might need here in late September.

Jonathan Safran Foer—the acclaimed author of Everything Is Illuminated; Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close; and a new worker of non-fiction, Eating Animals—spent his youth oscillating between omnivore and vegetarian. But on the brink of fatherhood, and facing the prospect of making dietary choices on a child’s behalf, his casual questioning became more urgent; Foer ended up visiting factory farms in the middle of the night, dissecting the emotional ingredients of meals from his childhood, and probing some of his most primal instincts about right and wrong. Presented by Town Hall with University Book Store.

Tickets are $5 at www.brownpapertickets.com or 800/838-3006, and at the door beginning at 6:30 pm. Town Hall members receive priority seating. Late seating not guaranteed.

Miller Lecture: Gordon Collier: A Land Apart
Thursday, 9/16, 7 – 9pm

Location: Meany Hall, University of Washington,
Seattle, 98195

Miller Lecture: Gordon Collier: A Land Apart

The 16th Annual Elisabeth Carey Miller Memorial Lecture features Gordon Collier speaking about gardening in New Zealand.
This illustrated lecture will focus on the unique flora of these far off specks of land where earth meets sky. Images of some of its 40 endemic plants that cling to life there will tell a tale of millions of years of isolation from other land masses; these include two plants beloved by gardeners everywhere — the giant forget-me-not Myosotidium hortensia, and the equally spectacular Astelia chathamica.

The lecture is FREE and is a gift of the Pendleton and Elisabeth Carey Miller Charitable Foundation.

Write Together

Writing is free. You can easily borrow a pen and use the back of your utility bill if you haven't got any money. Every Tuesday night I get together with a small writing group. We either compare our work from the previous week and/or write together. My friend Sierra Nelson, an awesome poet and collaborator extraordinaire, taught me this writing game.

The Rules

  • Decide how many lines you want your poem to be (let's say 12, for example).
  • Divide that by how many people are writing (let's say three people, so four).
  • Give each person a piece of paper for their lines (each person has four lines).
  • Each piece of paper represents one line of the poem. Write a rule for that line on the piece of paper.

The rules can be about grammar, imagery, meter, on anything at all.

Example: "In this line the speaker is reminded of something from their first day of high school."

or "In this line you repeat one word as many times as necessary."

or "In this line something is falling."

  • Once you have all written your rules, put them in the middle of the table and mix them up.
  • Without looking at them, take turns drawing one at a time and putting them in order on the table.
  • Each person writes a poem following these rules in this order.

Write.
Compare.

You probably won't get a great poem from this exercise, but you'll probably get a good line or two, or an idea, or a good laugh. Mostly, you'll get the knowledge that writing is possible.

Singin'in the Absence of Rain

I would never tell you what to do with your body, but if I did, if I made a tinsy-winsy suggestion these days, it would be to get wet on your own terms. Soon, Seattle, the clouds will have more to say about how wet we get than we do, but today, in August, we get to decide. So choose a slice of lake and jump or wade. Sneak over a fence into a pool. Run through a sprinkler. Set up the Slip 'n Slide. Today the water is here to heal you, to play with you, to wake you up up up to the sun.

Marcel the Shell

If you are already here, clicking on this will lead you to something free that is like a hotair balloon for being blue or an extra shot in your already happiness or maybe a magnet to the good side for your neutrality. Go see Marcel the Shell.

Talk is cheap? Stuff is free.

Talk about it.

Recently I decided I was ready to have a car again after a six-year break. It just seemed like there were so many cars that someone must have an extra. I wanted it to be reliable, safe enough to tote kids, get good gas mileage, and be free.

I also needed free insurance. I figured after six years of not having insurance, it wouldn't be cheap to get insured again.

I told about three people. Within a week, a friend of a friend I had never met before loaned me his 2001 Audi Allroad Quatro until August. He added me to his insurance.

I pay for gas.

You want something for free? Talk about it.

The Conservatory in Volunteer park

Run Goodwill Interceptions

Helping friends organize their spaces is a great way to get free goodies. I just got two awesome books, a fancy pillow, and a super-sleek folder by helping my sister organize her office.

So, I suggest you do a trade with someone you know. You help them organize, and you get first crack at their Goodwill pile.
Exchange.
Repeat.

Coyote Now Registering for Winter Term. Classes Start January 30th.

I've been doing some recruiting work for Coyote Central. I wouldn't normally go into middle schools nor do follow-up calling, but I think this organization is amazing.

Coyote Central is an organization that offers courses to 5th-9th graders on the weekends. The kids get to do amazing things like cooking, glass-bead making, animation, and welding. The courses are not free, but there is tons of scholarship money available, and Coyote has never turned down a kid because they didn't have the cash. If you know a curious middle-schooler, check it out.

They are now registering for Winter term. The fun classes fill up fast. Classes begin January 3oth!

So, let's see what happens when we combine two of the most amazing species on earth: The Yeti and The Zinester!

ZAPP is upstairs at

Hugo House
